Darlene Rose Steffes, age 74, of Chilton, passed away peacefully following a couragious battle with cancer, on Monday, March 26, 2012 at the Cherry Meadows Hospice in Appleton. She was born May 2, 1937 in Fond du Lac, daughter of the late Valentine & Olive (Steffen) Lefeber. She married Paul W. Steffes on November 16, 1968 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Jericho. Darlene had worked 17 years at the Chilton Shopping Center as a book keeper and later served as the Town of Brothertown Clerk for 35 years. Later in life, she worked 9 years at the Calumet Homestead, and volunteered countless hours at the Salvatorian Center in New Holstein. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Marytown and enjoyed the company of her friends while bowling in league at the Chilton Bowling Alley. Darlene was a good natured person who had a loving and caring personality, but was never afraid to call a spade a spade. In her free time, she volunteered at the Chilton Elementary School, knitted slippers and blankets for Harbor House, and loved messing around in the garden and picking berries with her granddaughter. Survivors include her husband: Paul; her son, Andy Steffes of Rosendale; a granddaughter: Amelia Steffes; a sister: Kathleen (David) Steffes of Plymouth; and 4 sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law: Ruby Gerner of Quinney, Severina Marsh of Walnut Creek, CA, Elaine Weber of Marytown, Alfred Steffes of Chilton, and Betty Steffes of Sherwood. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters-in-law: Mary (Ernie) Pitzen; Ruth (Cletus) Schneider; and her brothers-in-law: Marvin Gerner, John Steffes, Robert Steffes, Harry Marsh, and Roger Weber. Funeral service will be at 11:30 AM on Friday, March 30, 2012 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marytown with the Rev. Joe Coerber officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Jericho. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 29, 2012 and on Friday at the Church from 10:00 AM until 11:15 AM. A parish vigil service will be held Thursday evening at the funeral home at 8:00 PM.
