Esther M. Head, age 89, of rural Hilbert, died on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Chilton Care Center in Chilton. She was born January 6, 1923 in Stockbridge, daughter of the late Douglas & Caroline (Goeser) Stevens. Esther worked as a telephone operator while attending Stockbridge High School; following her graduation in 1942, she began working for a short time at Kimberly Clark. Esther married Kenneth Head on October 11, 1945 at St. Marys of the Seven Dolors in Stockbridge, and the couple farmed together until their retirement and also operated Head Insurance from 1947 until 1985 when their son took over the operations. She was an avid fisherman who looked forward to sturgeon spearing every year; it provided her an opportunity to outshine all of the men in her life by spearing a fish before them. Esther was an incredible gardener who raised beautiful flower beds, and delicious fresh vegetables. Following the many harvests in the fall, she canned thousands of quarts of veggies throughout her life. Esther had a compassionate soul who worked hard and was always willing to lend a hand to those in need. Survivors include her husband: Ken; 3 children: Joanne (Harold) Pickart of St. Cloud, Tom (Alyce) Head of Hilbert, Marilyn (Dick) Giere of Hilbert; 9 grandchildren: Kathleen (Corey) Schmidt, Karen (Jeff) Peterson, Wayne (Kim) Bauer, Kari (Ric) Schultz, Wanda Bauer and her special friend, Jose, Ken (Jessica) Pickart, Paula (Greg) Schultz, Tracey (Dean) Hemauer, Pat (Tina) Head; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister: Eunice (James) Ecker; and 2 sisters-in-law: Etta (Alvin) Schumacher, & Myrtle Ortlieb. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister: Lorena Lancour. Funeral service will be at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge with the Rev. Michael Betley officiating. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM on Tuesday, February 28, 2012.
