Gladys Ann Marie Goeldi, age 96 of New Holstein, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2013 at the Homestead Care Center, where she had been a resident for the past 7 months. Gladys was born on June 13, 1916 in the town of Stockbridge to Oscar and Anna (Siegwarth) Mayer. Gladys attended grade school in Stockbridge. At the age of 14, she boarded in Chilton and cleaned houses while attending Chilton High School, graduating in 1933. Following high school she graduated from the Outagamie County Normal School in Kaukauna with her teaching degree. She taught school in one room school houses in Stockbridge and the Town of New Holstein for 8 years. During her tenure as a teacher she made many lifelong friends with her students and their families, and was influential in the teaching career paths chosen by her daughter, daughter-in-law, and grandson. On June 5, 1940 she married Herbert Goeldi at Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Chilton; he preceded her in death on August 20, 1980. After their marriage she and Herb made their home on a farm in the Town of Charlestown where Gladys was a homemaker, mother, and grandmother. She also worked at the Kinder Korner Nursery in New Holstein. She was a lifelong member of Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Chilton where her family was one of the founding members of the church. She was also a member of Calumet County Merry Jane Homemakers, the Germania Society, The New Holstein Senior Citizens, Ebenezer Women's Guild, and an active member of the Chilton Eagles Auxiliary. Gladys served as a leader of the Chilton Tip-Top 4-H Club, and many are still using her recipe for baking brownies. As a homemaker Gladys had extraordinary skills in both the kitchen and the garden. Cookies, candies, and gladiolas were her specialties. She took great pride in exhibiting her cookies, candies and flowers at the Calumet County Fair, taking home many a blue ribbon for her efforts. In 1977 Herb and Gladys sold the farm and moved into the City of New Holstein where she lived until 2008 when she moved to Stanton Place in Chilton, where she greatly enjoyed the company of the other residents. Gladys enjoyed spending time with her family and took great pride in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with her family by car, playing cards, listening to music, visiting with friends, and taking her daily neighborhood walks until the age of 90. Gladys was one of Santa's special helpers for many years. On Saturday mornings she always looked forward to her favorite radio program, The Jerry Schneider Polka Show. Gladys is lovingly survived by her children, Jane (John) Schroeder of New Holstein, Don (Jean) Goeldi of Chilton; 3 grandchildren, Jason (Traci) Schroeder of Hudson, WI, Jay (Gretchen) Schroeder of Horicon, Nicholas Goeldi of Madison; 3 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband Herb, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Mayer; a sister, Dorothy Freund; a special friend of many years, Gilbert "Gib" Hansen; and many other good friends and relatives. Funeral service will be at 2 PM on Sunday January 13, 2013 at Ebenezer United Church of Christ in Chilton, with the Rev Kathy Rust officiating. Burial will follow at the Hillside Cemetery in Chilton. Friends may call at Ebenezer United Church of Christ, (44 Washington St.) in Chilton from noon to 1:45 PM on Sunday. A memorial fund has been established in the name of Gladys Goeldi. The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Gene Tipler for the many years of care, and to the loving staffs of the Calumet Homestead, the Calumet County Home Health Care Department, and Hospice Advantage. The care and compassion shown to Gladys was greatly appreciated, and will be remembered for ever. She will be greatly missed by many, but her family takes great comfort in the fact that she had a wonderful Christmas Holiday with family and friends, and is now reunited with her husband Herb, and many dear friends.
