Gretchen Elisabeth Ware, age 89, of Chilton, died on Monday, January 9, 2012 at Libby's House in Chilton. She was born September 29, 1922 in Prairie du Chien, daughter of the late Lawrence & Olga (Potratz) Kieser. Following her graduation from High School, Gretchen worked as a guide at the Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien and later moved to Milwaukee. While in Milwaukee, she worked as a civilian for the United States Navy during WWII. It was during this time, she met her husband. She married John "Jack" Ware on August 25, 1944 in Milwaukee and the couple moved North to Chilton where Jack operated his own barber shop. Gretchen devoted her time as a mom, and became actively involved in all of her children's lives and their activities. She volunteered in the PTA and assisted in the Camp Fire Girls. When her children were completed with school, she continued her formal education and became a nursing assistant and worked at the Calumet Medical Center for a number of years. Her husband, Jack, preceded her in death on April 14, 1987. Following his funeral, Gretchen applied for the first time for her driver's license. Following a successful driver's test, Gretchen began looking for that new set of wheels that offered her another opportunity to serve others. With her license, anyone who needed a ride to an appointment, or who wanted an errand run could count on Gretchen and her 'Servant's Heart' to be ready and willing to lend that lift. She was a long time member of St. Martin Lutheran Church in Chilton where she also belonged to the Women's Guild, and the Calumet County Homemakers. Later in life, she also volunteered many hours at the Shepherd's Attic in Chilton. She loved doing crossword puzzles, was a voracious reader, enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers, and kept a close eye on the latest political landscape throughout her life. Her good sense of humor, and pleasant attitude allowed her to keep a positive outlook on life. She is a survivor of Polio and waged a long battle against Alzheimer's Disease. Survivors include her children: Jeffrey (Cleo) Ware of Fennimore, LeAnna (Roy Dorman) Ware of Madison, Deborah (Charles) Shaver of Chilton, Cheryl (Craig) Callis of Fond du Lac, James (Janice) Ware of Evansville, IN; 10 grandchildren: Jeff (Stephanie) Ware, Rebecca Mankins, Christopher (Rhonda) Ware, Angela Ware, Stacy (Alan) Rudig, Elijah (Rosemary) Shaver, Myhre (J.D.) Dorman, Emily (Jason) Greene, Jason Enders, Andrew Ware; 4 step-grandchildren: Graham (Amy) Callis, Maryjane (Jeremy) Lueck, Chris (Shelly) Dorman, Cyndi (Craig) Ellefson; 23 great-grandchildren: Emily, Alison, Olivia, Grace, Holly, Tyler, Tessa, Max, Jack, Elizabeth, Gabriel, Jamara, Alexia, Zavier, Brooklyn, Hudsyn, Ceilia, Isabel, Avery, Oliver, Jayden, Corbin, Madeline; and a sister: June Gleich of Lexington, SC. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 2 sisters: Virginia, Marjorie; and a brother: Phillip. Funeral service will be at 4:00 PM on Friday, January 13, 2012 at St. Martin Lutheran Church (717 Memorial Dr.) in Chilton with the Rev. Wayne Huebner officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Waupaca. Friends may call at the church from 2:00 PM until 3:45 PM on Friday, January 13, 2012. Memorials in the name of Gretchen Elisabeth Ware are appreciated for the Alzheimer's Association.
