John G. Freidel, age 84 years, 5 months and 10 days of Chilton Wis., died on December 10, 2012 at 12:40 pm. He was born on June 29, 1928 in Watertown Wisconsin, the son of Edward and May (Porter) Freidel. He grew up in Waterloo Wis., attending St. Joseph Catholic grade school graduating from Waterloo High School in 1946.
In 1948, John enrolled at the University of Wisconsin (Madison) where he majored in Physical Education. He served as the Badger football team student manager for the '51-'53 Hard Rocks team. Upon graduation with a B.S. degree in Physical Education, was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Transportation Corps. He served in Korea near the end of the war.
In 1954, John taught at Reedsville (Wis) High School as a Physical Education and Science Teacher, as well as head football, basketball and baseball coach.
In 1956, John moved to Chilton (Wis.) High School, where he was a teacher for thirty-seven years. Besides teaching Physical Education, he also coached varsity baseball, JV football, varsity basketball and golf. His baseball teams won the conference championship in both 1959 and 1960. In 1968, he was appointed to be the schools first Athletic Director, a position he held for twenty-seven years. In 1986 he was named Wisconsin District IV Athletic Director of the year. He retired from teaching in 1990, but continued to work as Athletic Director for three more years. In retirement, he continued his involvement in sports by working as the Chilton High's scoreboard/scorebook operator.
John served on the committee to build a new high school in Chilton, including the new gymnasium, swim pool and the auditorium. He was a member of the UW Alumni Association and National W Club.
He enjoyed golfing, skiing, photography, and genealogy. He and his wife Lois enjoyed watching their children and grandchildren participate in sports. They travelled to many major athletic events, including three Olympics, the Super Bowl, Rose Bowl, PGA Masters Tournaments, Final Four, Indy 500, Daytona 500, and Kentucky Derby as well as the high school's four State Championships.
John married Lois Mae Berner, also of Waterloo Wisconsin on April 18, 1953 at St. Joseph's Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children; Lynne (James) Lintner – Appleton, Thomas (Katie Kovalcik) Freidel – Colorado Springs CO, Michael (Kristi Eberhardt) Freidel – Marshall Wi, Patricia (Mike) Jehn, Waukesha WI, and Peter (Janess Piltz) Freidel – Clermont Fl. He is further survived by his sister Barbara (Freidel) Moroder, and twelve grandchildren: Brian Lintner, Eric Lintner, Nicholas Lintner, Matthew Freidel, Sarah Freidel, Ellen Freidel, Austin Cain, Leah Cain, Benjamin Jehn, Casey Jehn, Amanda Freidel, and Andrew Freidel, along with a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Christopher Freidel, brother in law Joseph Moroder, niece Julie Moroder, brother in law and sister in law Bruce and Audrey White, a brother in law Ron Fox.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 am on Friday, December 14, 2012 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (54 E. Main St.) in Chilton with the Rev. Bob Kollath officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, December 13, 2012 and on Friday at the church from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. A parish vigil service will take place Thursday evening at the funeral home beginning at 7:00 pm.
Memorials given in the name of John G. Freidel are appreciated for development of the Chilton High School "Wall of Honor".
